Rare Disease Day 2025: More Than You Can Imagine
Rare diseases affect over 300 million people worldwide, yet many patients face long diagnostic journeys, limited treatment options, and a lack of awareness. While each rare disease affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people, collectively, they present significant challenges in healthcare systems. 72% are genetic, and 70% begin in childhood, making early diagnosis critical.
This Rare Disease Day, we raise awareness for equity in diagnosis, treatment, and care –because every patient deserves access to the right support, regardless of how rare their condition may be.
These patients' journeys are as diverse and complex as the diseases they face. While innovation is challenging, a shared vision, unwavering commitment and patient-centered focus are leading the way to an innovative approach to rare disease care. Shining a spotlight on rare diseases is essential not only to support those living with rare diseases but also to Caring for People’s Health by finding new ways and means to develop innovative healthcare treatments.
On average, it takes five years for a rare disease patient to receive an accurate diagnosis. This delay is often compounded by limited access to treatment. While over 230 orphan drugs are approved in the EU, thousands of rare diseases still lack effective therapies. Beyond healthcare, rare diseases place financial and social burdens on families, with many caregivers forced to reduce or stop working.
Rare Disease Day exists to close these gaps – advocating for faster diagnoses, improved treatment options, and stronger support networks worldwide. Since its launch in 2008, it has grown to over 100 countries, raising awareness and driving policy change.
